Add a text watermark to a PDF

Mark a PDF with a short status or purpose, such as Draft or For review. Choose whether it appears in the center or repeats across the page, then check the preview before downloading.

The watermark is added as a transparent image layer. It does not encrypt the file, restrict access or erase the original page content.

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

  1. Choose one standard PDF.
  2. Enter a one-line watermark, then adjust its placement, color, text size, opacity and angle.
  3. Leave the page range blank to use every page, or enter a range such as 1-3,5.
  4. Select Create preview and PDF. Check the page previews and download the file. Create a new preview after changing settings.

File support and limitations

Use one standard PDF with 1–50 pages. The input limit is 20 MiB and the output limit is 50 MiB. Password-protected PDFs, forms, annotations, bookmarks, attachments and other special structures are not supported. Some unusual image formats or very large images may also prevent a preview.

The watermark is a single line of up to 80 characters. It is added as a transparent image layer, not selectable text, while the original page text remains. Long text may be reduced to fit. On very large pages, the watermark image may look less sharp.

The watermark follows the displayed page orientation, including rotated pages. Use the preview to check placement, then open the downloaded PDF to verify it. A watermark is not encryption, access control or redaction: it may be removed, and it does not erase confidential content underneath.

The PDF and watermark text are processed in your browser and are not uploaded or saved automatically. Changing the file, clearing the tool or leaving the page removes the current result. The original PDF is not changed. Document-level metadata is not guaranteed to carry over.

Common questions

Can I select the watermark text in the finished PDF?

No. The watermark is a transparent image overlay. The existing PDF page text stays in place, but the watermark itself is not added as selectable text.

Does a watermark prevent someone from removing it or copying the page?

No. It is a visible mark, not a security feature. It does not encrypt the PDF, restrict access or permanently cover the content underneath.

Can I watermark only selected pages?

Yes. Enter page numbers and ranges such as 1-3,5. Leave the field blank to apply the watermark to every page. Check each preview before downloading.

Add a PDF watermark and verify the pages before sharing

Mark only the pages that still need review

Imagine a five-page proposal where pages 1–3 and 5 are still under review, while page 4 is a confirmed attachment. Enter Draft as the watermark and set the page range to 1-3,5. The range uses the PDF’s actual page order; a number printed on a page may be different if the document has a cover or front matter.

The range field accepts page numbers and ranges separated by commas, such as 1-3,5. Leave it blank to mark every page. Before creating the result, check that the range points to the intended pages in the current version of the PDF. If someone later inserts or removes a page, the same numbers may refer to different content.

Keep the watermark short and readable

A watermark works best as a short status or purpose: Draft, For review, or a recipient label. The limit is 80 characters, but a longer sentence can shrink to fit or cross busy content. Put explanations, deadlines and instructions in the email or on a cover page, where readers can find them without covering the document.

Choose a color that remains visible on both light and dark areas. A dark watermark may disappear over a dark chart, while a strong color can distract from figures and dates. If the pages use very different layouts, one style may not suit all of them. Check a dense page, a page with a chart and a page in a different orientation before deciding.

Choose placement, angle and opacity with a preview

The tool offers two placements: one centered mark or a repeated pattern across the page. It does not let you drag the watermark to a corner. A centered mark can overlap a table; a repeated mark covers more of the page. Start with a text size and angle that are easy to read, then lower the opacity only as far as the text remains visible.

Use the page with the most detailed content as your first check. Then inspect a landscape page, a different page size and the last selected page. The same angle can sit differently on pages with different proportions. If the PDF will be printed, review the downloaded file in print preview, including grayscale if relevant. A browser preview cannot guarantee how every printer will render the mark.

Changing any setting clears the earlier result and requires a new preview. The preview is made from the generated PDF, but still open the downloaded file and check the first and last selected pages as well as an unmarked page. Confirm that the mark is present only where you intended.

Understand what the watermark changes—and what it does not

This tool places the text on a transparent image layer. The watermark itself is not selectable text, while text that was already on the PDF page remains in place. Scanned pages do not become searchable through watermarking. Font appearance depends on the fonts available in the browser and device, so check characters and line breaks in the output.

A visible watermark is not a password, digital signature, access restriction or secure redaction. It may be removed or covered, and the original text or images remain underneath it. Do not use a mark such as Confidential to hide a name, account number or other private information. Use a suitable redaction process and verify that the removed information cannot be searched or copied.

The tool accepts one standard PDF of 1–50 pages, up to 20 MiB; the output limit is 50 MiB. Password-protected PDFs, forms, annotations, bookmarks, attachments and other special structures are not supported. The original file is not modified, and document-level metadata is not guaranteed to carry over. Files are processed in your browser and are not uploaded or saved automatically.

Open the downloaded file before sharing it

Open the downloaded PDF from your device rather than relying only on the preview. Check the first page, the start and end of the chosen range, the page that should remain unmarked and the final page. Confirm the wording, placement, readability and page order. If you adjust the settings afterward, create and download a new result; an earlier download does not update itself.

Keep the unmarked original and give the new copy a clear filename that matches its purpose and recipient. If the document changes from draft to final, start from the clean original so an old mark is not left underneath a new one. Clear the tool or leave the page only after saving the version you need.

If the source is an image rather than a PDF, use the image watermark tool. If the page order needs to change first, organize the PDF before adding the mark.
