Turn a sprite sheet into a GIF
Set the row and column count for a regular sprite sheet, review each cell, and make a looping or one-time GIF from the frames you select.
The tool does not detect frame boundaries automatically. Check the grid before removing backgrounds or exporting.
Still JPG, PNG or WebP · Up to 10 MiB and 12 megapixels. Images are not uploaded for processing.

Split and remove background
How do I turn a sprite sheet into an animation?
Add one still image containing multiple frames, set the rows and columns, and check that the grid aligns with each frame. If the sheet has outer margins or gaps, expand the advanced settings and adjust the crop area. Select Split image, then reorder frames, leave out blank cells, or adjust each frame’s position before creating the GIF.
For example, a 4 × 4 sheet produces 16 frames. The default order is left to right, then top to bottom. Bounce playback reverses at the last frame without repeating either endpoint. The PNG ZIP contains each selected frame once, in its selected order; it does not add the repeated frames used for the bounce.
Will single-color background removal delete a white shirt?
Single-color removal affects only similar colors connected to the outer edge of the source image. Enclosed white areas remain, but a subject that touches a similar-colored background may also be removed. Start with a low tolerance and inspect every frame after splitting. If the result is unsuitable, keep the original background instead.
You can keep transparency that is already in the source. GIF uses a palette index for transparent pixels and cannot represent partial transparency per pixel, so soft edges in hair or shadows become either transparent or opaque. PNG can keep partial transparency. The checkerboard indicates transparency and is not included in the downloads.
The transparent color index is defined inGIF89a specification, section 23. Palette and transparency limits are separate from this tool’s single-color background removal. Keeping the source transparent does not let GIF retain PNG’s partially transparent edges.
Why does the character jump during playback?
If a character is in a different position in each frame, it will still move unevenly after the frames are combined. Select a frame and adjust its horizontal and vertical offsets. Values use output pixels; positive values move right or down, and anything outside the canvas is cropped. The tool does not identify characters or create missing frames automatically.
The tool accepts still JPG, PNG or WebP images up to 10 MiB, 12 megapixels and 8,192 px on either side, with up to 64 cells. Images are processed in your browser, not uploaded or saved automatically. For separate images, use the GIF maker. To split an image into tiles without making an animation, use the Image splitter.
Prepare a sprite sheet and check its frames before export
Back to toolUse a regular grid and enter its dimensions
Add one still JPG, PNG, or WebP sprite sheet, then choose 1–8 columns and 1–8 rows. The grid must contain 2–64 cells. For example, a sheet with four columns and two rows contains eight frames. This tool divides the full image evenly; it does not recognize frame outlines, spacing, or irregular cell sizes for you.
If the source includes margins or gaps around sprites, adjust the crop area and cell spacing before exporting. Inspect the preview at the edges: a grid line through a character or a neighboring sprite in the same cell will also appear in the output frame.
| Columns × rows | Cells |
|---|---|
| 4 × 2 | 8 |
| 4 × 4 | 16 |
| 8 × 8 | 64 |
Review the frame order and omit empty cells
Cells are initially read from left to right, then top to bottom. You can reorder selected frames and disable cells that are blank or not part of the animation. The preview follows the selected order, so check the motion before making the GIF.
The tool does not infer a character's motion from artwork. If the source frames are out of sequence, arrange them manually. Disabled cells are left out of both the GIF and the PNG frame ZIP.
Remove only a connected background color carefully
Background removal samples a color from the edge of the full sprite sheet and removes similar pixels connected to the outer boundary. It runs on the whole sheet before the frames are divided, not separately inside each cell. A same-colored area fully enclosed inside a cell may stay visible, while a connected part of a character can be removed if its color is too similar.
Use the tolerance carefully and inspect every frame, especially thin outlines and pale details. If the background is not a mostly even color or touches the subject, keep the original background or prepare a cleaned PNG elsewhere.
Set motion offsets and frame duration
Each selected frame can be shifted horizontally or vertically by -640 to 640 output pixels. Small offsets can make a still pose move, but they do not redraw the character or create intermediate motion. Keep the shifts modest and compare adjacent frames to avoid a distracting jump.
Frame durations are 100, 200, 300, 500, 750, 1,000, 1,500, or 2,000 milliseconds. For example, eight frames at 100 ms each make a 0.8-second loop before it repeats. Choose Loop, Play once, or Bounce. Bounce reverses the frame order and skips duplicate endpoints; the PNG ZIP still includes each selected frame once in its selected order.
| Delay per frame | One pass |
|---|---|
| 100 ms | 0.8 seconds |
| 200 ms | 1.6 seconds |
| 500 ms | 4 seconds |
Choose GIF or PNG frames for export
GIF output uses a longest edge of 160, 240, 320, 480, or 640 px. During preview, each PNG frame is also limited to a 640 px longest edge. The PNG ZIP contains the selected frames individually, in their chosen order, and preserves partial transparency.
GIF has a limited palette and one transparent color index rather than partial transparency. This tool reserves a palette entry for transparent pixels, leaving up to 255 other palette entries for colors. Select a transparent, white, or black GIF background, then inspect thin edges and soft shadows in the exported animation.
Check input limits and keep your export
The source is limited to one still JPG, PNG, or WebP file up to 10 MiB, 12 megapixels, and 8,192 px on either side. The grid can have 1–8 rows and columns, with 2–64 cells. A static image is required; animated files are not supported.
Image reading, background processing, and GIF creation happen in your browser. The source and results are cleared when you clear the page, refresh, or leave. Download the GIF or PNG ZIP before closing the tool.
Questions about sprite sheets and GIFs
Does the tool find frames in an irregular sprite sheet?
No. It divides the sheet into an evenly spaced grid using the row and column counts you provide. Sheets with unequal cells or irregular gaps need to be prepared as a regular grid first.
Why did some background pixels remain?
Only pixels similar to the sampled edge color and connected to the outside edge are removed. A separated patch inside a cell may remain. Adjust the tolerance and inspect the frames, or prepare a transparent PNG before adding it.
Why do the PNG frames look smoother than the GIF?
PNG preserves partial transparency, while GIF uses a limited color palette and a transparent color index. Soft edges and subtle colors can look different in GIF. Review the downloaded animation and adjust the artwork or background if needed.
Can I export frames without animation?
Yes. Choose the PNG frame ZIP export to save the selected cells as separate PNG files without combining them into an animation.
